WELCOME TO CONGREGATION OF ISRAEL
Frequently Asked Questions

We look forward to welcoming you to Congregation of Israel. Whether you are joining us for prayer, Torah study, or another gathering, we invite you to discover a community where Jewish teachings, spiritual reflection, and everyday living come together.
Our approach is guided by Jewish Science and Applied Judaism, with an emphasis on recognizing the GOD within us and expressing that awareness through compassion, gratitude, and purposeful action. You are welcome to bring your questions and explore with us.
What Can I Expect?
Jewish Science emphasizes meditation, affirmative prayer, and visualization as ways to deepen awareness of the Divine presence. Applied Judaism encourages us to carry spiritual understanding into our choices and relationships. These perspectives inform how we approach prayer and study at Congregation of Israel.
You do not need to know the prayers or be familiar with these teachings before visiting. Join in, listen, or reflect quietly in the ways that feel comfortable to you.
Should I Let Someone Know Before I Visit?
Yes, please let us know when you plan to attend and which service, class, or event interests you. We would be glad to welcome you and share helpful details before you arrive. Service and gathering details may vary, so please check our calendar for current information.
Is Parking Available and What About Security?
Parking is available. Volunteers and security personnel are on site for most prayer services and events. Security cameras and other measures are also in place throughout the premises. If you have questions about arrival, parking, or a particular gathering, please contact us before your visit.
Why Is There No Signage?
Our synagogue is undergoing major renovations, including work on the building and its exterior, so signage may not yet be visible. Please contact us for help identifying the building and finding your way when you arrive. Thank you for your patience as these improvements continue.
Who Attends Congregation of Israel?
Our diverse congregation brings together people of many ages and life experiences, including young families, longtime Detroit residents, and people who are new or returning to the city. Whether you have a lifelong connection to synagogue or are beginning to explore, we welcome you to visit, learn, and get to know us.
Do I Need to Be a Member or Have a Jewish Background?
No. You do not need to be a member to attend. We welcome visitors from a wide range of religious and cultural backgrounds, including those with Christian backgrounds and people exploring Judaism. You are welcome to learn about Jewish Science and Applied Judaism at your own pace and ask questions along the way.
